Refinery industrial skyline in 1957. Baytown refinery's ever-changing industrial skyline is pictured from atop research building on the west side of plant, showing major processing units through center of refinery in 1957. Low unit on extreme left, one of several new petrochemical units, manufactures paraxylene, base stock for synthetic fabric. To right of tall flare stack are columns and vertical furnace of catalytic light ends unit No. 2 and catalytic polymerization unit. Tall unit, next visible on right, is No. 2 cat cracker. Towers in front of cat unit and immediately to right are part of catalytic light ends unit No. 1. Four towers with graceful plumes of exhaust steam comprise naphtha fractionating unit. Seen in the distance just beyond NFU are slivery towers of light ends fractionating units. Dark units jutting into skyline are hydrofining units and section of old thermal cracking coils. Moving to the right, four dark stacks jutting out of building mark No. 2 power plant and No. 5 boilerhouse. On extreme right is 21-story No. 1 cat cracker, (which was built on site shown in center view of picture below), which gives the reader an excellent idea of how much the Baytown refinery has grown through the years. Spots where cameras made views shown on these pages are nearly a mile apart - and the plant is still growing. In the current expansion program, several units are under construction.
