Rice Threshing Crew in 1900 Baytown

In 1900 most of the area in what is now the city of Baytown looked like this. There were small settlements at Wooster, at the mouth of Goose Creek and along Cedar Bayou, but most of the area was good, rich farm land used principally for rice farming. This is a shot of a rice-threshing crew. After the rice had matured in the field, it was cycled, bundled and brought to the thresher. It was then threshed, sacked, loaded on boats or barges and taken to market, either in Houston or Galveston. The total population in Baytown at that time was 300.
