September 11, 1961 Hurricane Carla was the worst hurricane to hit Texas since the great Galveston storm of 1900. Total damage to the Gulf Coast was estimated at up to $500 million dollars. Locally the Brownwood and Lakewood additions were hardest hit. Total damages to Baytown property owners was estimated in excess of $4.5 million.
