Dr Ashbel Smith; A leader in all movements for the advancement of education in Texas, he served three separate terms in the Texas Legislature, and was also appointed surgeon-general of the Texas Army. He retired to his home on Evergreen Plantation. He was born in 1805 and died in 1886.
